How to Properly Back Up During a Driving Test

Backing up is one of the more straightforward maneuvers on a road test — but it's also one where small technique errors add up quickly. Examiners aren't just watching whether you move the car in reverse. They're watching how you position your body, where your eyes go, how you handle the steering, and whether you check your surroundings before you ever touch the gear shift.

Understanding what's being evaluated — and why — helps you approach the maneuver the way examiners expect it.

What Examiners Are Actually Looking For

When you back up during a road test, the examiner is assessing a cluster of related skills simultaneously:

  • Observation before movement — Did you check mirrors and blind spots before shifting into reverse?
  • Body position — Are you turning to look out the rear window, or relying entirely on mirrors?
  • Speed control — Is the vehicle moving at a slow, controlled pace?
  • Steering accuracy — Are you maintaining a straight line or following the intended path without overcorrecting?
  • Awareness of surroundings — Are you scanning continuously, not just glancing once at the start?

Each of these is weighted differently depending on the state and the specific test format, but all of them are standard components of reverse driving evaluation.

The Standard Technique for Backing Up

Most examiner scoring guides expect something close to this sequence:

1. Come to a complete stop first. Before shifting into reverse, the car should be fully stopped. Shifting while still rolling — even slightly — is flagged in most evaluations.

2. Check your mirrors. Look at your left side mirror, rearview mirror, and right side mirror before any movement. This takes two to three seconds and signals active awareness.

3. Turn and look over your right shoulder. This is the step many test-takers skip or shortchange. Examiners generally expect you to physically turn your body and look through the rear window — not just glance in mirrors. Looking over your right shoulder while placing your right hand on the back of the passenger seat (or headrest) is the technique most driving instructors teach and most examiners recognize as correct form.

4. Shift into reverse, then move slowly. Once you've checked your surroundings, shift into reverse and release the brake gradually. The vehicle should move at a slow, walking-pace speed — fast enough to demonstrate control, slow enough to stop quickly if needed.

5. Keep scanning. Don't fix your eyes in one direction. Continue checking mirrors and the rear window throughout the maneuver. Examiners watch whether your eyes stay active.

6. Steer smoothly. If you're backing in a straight line, keep small adjustments — don't overcorrect. If you're backing around a curve or into a space, steer gradually rather than sharply.

Why Body Position Gets Marked Down 👁️

Many test-takers fail points on reversing not because they go too fast or veer off course — but because they rely on mirrors alone without turning to look.

Mirrors have blind spots. Examiners know this. The expectation that you turn your head and look is built into most scoring rubrics because it reflects what safe drivers actually do. Using only your backup camera — where one is available — is also generally insufficient for a passing road test, since cameras don't replace active observation and some vehicles used in tests may not have them.

How This Maneuver Appears on the Test

Backing up typically comes in one of a few formats depending on your state and the specific test route:

Not every state tests every format. Variables That Affect How This Is Evaluated

State scoring rubrics differ. Some states use point-deduction systems where minor errors accumulate; others use pass/fail checkboxes for specific behaviors. What counts as a critical error versus a minor deduction for backing up varies.

License class matters. Backing maneuvers for a standard Class D license are evaluated differently than those required for a CDL, which involves much larger vehicles with significantly different sight lines and reverse handling.

Vehicle type plays a role. If you're tested in your own vehicle versus a DMV-provided vehicle, the sight lines, mirror positioning, and camera availability will differ. Familiarity with the specific vehicle you're tested in affects your ability to back smoothly.

Age and test type. Teen drivers going through a graduated driver licensing (GDL) program may face different road test formats — sometimes more structured, sometimes administered through a driver education program — than adult first-time applicants. 🚗

If backing causes point deductions on your test, it typically falls into one of two categories: minor errors (not checking mirrors thoroughly, moving slightly too fast) or critical errors (striking an object, failing to check for pedestrians, backing without observation). Critical errors generally result in immediate test failure in most states, regardless of how well the rest of the test went.

How scoring accumulates, what the pass threshold is, and how retakes are scheduled all depend on your state's specific procedures — including wait periods between attempts and any fees for retesting.
