Can You Get an International Driver's License Online?

The short answer is: you can start the process online in some cases, but a fully online transaction from start to finish isn't always possible — and what "international driver's license" actually means matters a lot here.

What an International Driver's License Actually Is

The term "international driver's license" gets used loosely, but the document most people are referring to is an International Driving Permit (IDP). An IDP is not a standalone license. It's a translation document — a standardized booklet that renders your existing domestic driver's license into multiple languages so it can be recognized by traffic authorities in foreign countries.

An IDP is only valid when carried alongside your current, valid driver's license from your home country. If your domestic license is expired, suspended, or revoked, an IDP based on it has no legal standing.

The IDP is governed by international treaties, most notably the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the 1968 Vienna Convention. Not every country is a signatory to both, which affects where an IDP is accepted and under what terms.

Who Can Issue an IDP in the United States

In the United States, only two organizations are authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs to American residents:

  • AAA (American Automobile Association)
  • AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance)

No other entity — including private websites, third-party services, or online "license" vendors — is authorized to issue a legitimate U.S. IDP. 🚩 Dozens of websites sell what they call "international driving licenses" for fees ranging from modest to significant. These documents are not recognized by foreign governments or law enforcement and have no legal validity.

What Part of the IDP Process Can Be Done Online

This is where things vary depending on the issuing organization and your specific situation.

AAA, for example, has offered online IDP applications through its website for members and non-members alike in many areas. The process typically involves:

  1. Submitting an online application
  2. Uploading passport-style photos
  3. Providing a copy of your valid U.S. driver's license
  4. Paying the applicable fee

Whether you can complete this entirely online — or whether you'll need to visit a local AAA branch in person — depends on factors like your location, membership status, and current processing procedures. Some applicants in areas without a nearby branch may be able to complete the process by mail.

AATA processes applications differently, and availability may vary.

Key Variables That Affect the Process

Even within the IDP application system, several factors shape your specific experience:

Your location. Access to AAA branches varies significantly. Rural applicants may not have a local office and will rely on mail or online processing. Urban applicants may have walk-in options.

Your membership status. AAA members and non-members can both obtain IDPs, but fees and processing options may differ.

Processing time. Standard processing times vary. If you're traveling soon, expedited or in-person processing may be the only practical option. Mail-based applications require lead time.

Your destination country. Not all countries accept IDPs from all treaty signatories, and some countries require IDPs only for certain license classes or vehicle types. The IDP's usefulness depends entirely on where you're driving.

Your existing license. Your domestic driver's license must be valid at the time of application and remain valid during your trip. If your license is close to expiration, you may need to renew it before applying.

Age. Some countries impose minimum age requirements for drivers that differ from U.S. standards, regardless of IDP status.

What an IDP Does Not Do

An IDP does not:

  • Replace or upgrade your driver's license
  • Grant driving privileges beyond what your domestic license already allows
  • Permit you to drive in the United States as a foreign visitor (that's handled separately)
  • Serve as identification for purposes unrelated to driving

If you're a foreign national driving in the United States, the process works in reverse — your home country's license (and potentially an IDP issued by your home country's authorized organization) governs your driving privileges here, subject to the rules of the specific U.S. state where you're driving.

The Part You'll Need to Verify Yourself

Whether you can complete your IDP application entirely online, what it will cost, how long it will take to arrive, and whether your destination country honors it — none of that is uniform. 🌍

AAA's and AATA's processes, fees, and availability shift over time. Your destination country's specific requirements may differ from general IDP norms. And your own driving history, license class, and the timing of your trip all factor into what preparation you actually need before driving abroad.

The process is more accessible than it used to be, but "online" doesn't yet mean instantaneous or universally available — and it definitely doesn't mean any document purchased from an unofficial website carries legal weight.
