Can You Get an International Driver's License in One Day?

Yes — in most cases, getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) is genuinely a same-day process. But whether that's true for you depends on where you live, which issuing organization you use, and how you apply.

Here's how the process works, and where it can slow down.

What an International Driving Permit Actually Is

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not a separate license. It's a standardized translation document — printed in multiple languages — that accompanies your valid domestic driver's license when you drive abroad. Most countries that recognize IDPs under the 1949 Geneva Convention or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic require you to carry both your IDP and your original license together.

An IDP does not replace your license, grant new driving privileges, or serve as identification on its own. If your domestic license is expired, suspended, or revoked, an IDP issued on top of it won't make you legally permitted to drive.

Who Issues IDPs in the United States

In the U.S., only two organizations are authorized by the federal government to issue IDPs:

  • AAA (American Automobile Association)
  • AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance)

No government agency — not the DMV, not the State Department — issues IDPs to U.S. residents. Any third-party website charging fees to "process" or "certify" an IDP is not an authorized issuer. The U.S. State Department has explicitly warned travelers about fraudulent IDP vendors online.

How the Same-Day Process Works 🗓️

For most applicants, same-day issuance is entirely realistic through AAA. Here's the general flow:

In-person at an AAA branch:

  1. Bring your valid U.S. driver's license
  2. Bring two passport-style photos (some AAA locations can take photos on-site)
  3. Complete the application form
  4. Pay the fee (fees are set by the issuing organization, not by states or the DMV)
  5. Receive your IDP before you leave

Walk-in appointments are accepted at most AAA branches. If you show up with the right documents, you can typically walk out the same day with an IDP in hand.

By mail:

Mail applications are also accepted, but same-day issuance is not possible. Processing and delivery adds days or weeks depending on timing and postal service.

What Can Slow the Process Down

Same-day issuance assumes you have everything ready. Common friction points:

Potential DelayWhy It Matters
Missing passport photosMany applicants forget these; not all branches offer photo services
Expired domestic licenseAn IDP requires a valid license — expired licenses disqualify the application
AAA membership questionsSome branch policies vary; non-members can typically still apply
Branch availabilityNot every city has a walk-in AAA office; rural applicants may face longer drives
Photo quality requirementsPassport-style photos must meet specific size and format standards

If you're applying the day before international travel, confirm in advance that your nearest issuing office can accommodate a walk-in and has the capacity to issue same-day.

Eligibility Requirements That Apply Regardless of Speed ✅

Before focusing on how fast you can get an IDP, the underlying requirements matter:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must hold a valid U.S. driver's license (not expired, not suspended)
  • Your license must be issued by a U.S. state or territory
  • You must be a U.S. resident

An IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue. You cannot renew an existing IDP — you apply for a new one each time.

Where IDPs Are and Aren't Recognized

Even a same-day IDP doesn't guarantee you can use it everywhere. Recognition depends on the destination country:

  • Countries that are signatories to the 1949 Geneva Convention generally recognize U.S.-issued IDPs
  • Some countries — including Mexico and Canada — generally recognize your U.S. driver's license directly, without requiring an IDP
  • Some countries have additional requirements beyond an IDP, such as specific vehicle insurance or local driving permits
  • A handful of countries do not recognize IDPs at all

Checking the requirements of your specific destination before traveling is essential — and that's country-level research, not something an IDP issuer or the DMV can resolve for you.

If You're a Foreign National in the U.S.

The IDP process described above applies to U.S. residents applying through U.S.-authorized issuers. If you're a foreign national visiting or residing in the United States and want to drive here using a license issued in another country, the process works in the opposite direction:

  • Your home country's IDP (issued before you traveled) may allow you to drive in the U.S. for a limited period
  • After a certain length of residency — which varies by state — you may be required to obtain a U.S. state driver's license instead

Each state sets its own rules about how long a foreign license remains valid for residents, what documentation is required to convert, and whether any testing is waived. Those timelines and procedures differ significantly from state to state.

The Part That Depends on Your Situation

For most U.S. residents with a valid license, the same-day question has a straightforward answer: yes, if you apply in person at an authorized AAA or AATA location with the right documents, you can leave with an IDP the same day.

What this general answer can't resolve is whether your specific license is currently valid, which countries you're traveling to and what they require, whether there's an accessible issuing office near you, and how foreign-national status or out-of-state circumstances affect your specific situation. Those variables are the ones that actually determine your outcome.
